LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (FOX44) — Fourteen people are in the Livingston Parish Jail Thursday night, accused of selling prescription pills. It was all part of a big warrant roundup.
Prescription drugs are a big problem especially around here. So Sheriff Jason Ard and Colonel Calvin Bowden went out on a warrant round up, and I went along for the ride.
"So we're trying to crack down as much as we can because there's a lot of families that get affected by this when they have loved ones who get addicted to prescriptions, and it gets into the black market," Ard said.
The sheriff and these deputies are trying to protect families here in Livingston Parish, including their own.
Sheriff Ard grew up in this parish. For more than 20 years, he's been working to keep the streets safe especially for kids.
"The prescription medication affects everyone, and not only when it gets to the kids, it gets into the school system, and that's what we don't want to happen," Ard said.
But roundups like this take a lot of time, months of planning, and sometimes a little luck.
"So, it can be pretty challenging, but they do a really good job at it," Ard said. "As you can see, having this many warrants is really showing that things are paying off."
It's part "Operation - No Freedom for You" and making this many arrests is thanks, in part, to you.
"Just earlier we were looking for one person we couldn't find, and we had three or four people who were just residents trying to find them," Ard said.
Everyone involved in the roundup is charged with some sort of prescription drug abuse.
"They can get anywhere from two to 10 years, and some, depending on if they are on probation," Ard said. "We had a couple of weapons we had to recover, if they're a convicted felon, they can receive 5 to 10 years."
But for these deputies say it's a success.
"I'm glad we were able to get together today. There was no injuries. So, so far it's been a very successful day," Ard said.
Sheriff Ard said they are not stopping here either. He said there are more arrests on the way.
